Together is Better demonstrates the strength and importance of a diverse community that works together in a way that is accessible to children. Each page has minimal text. The pictures are simple, using a muted color pallet, and include characters that are diverse in many ways. Different cultures, skin tones, features, hair, ages, and abilities, including a child in a wheelchair, are depicted.
Each spread discusses child-friendly ways readers can participate in bettering their community. The suggested activities, such as working in a community garden, volunteering at a food bank, or cleaning up a park, are available to children in most neighborhoods.
Visiting older adults, teaching new immigrants English, and fundraising for charities are other volunteer opportunities in the story that benefit the community. In addition, they teach children empathy, generosity, kindness, and responsibility. There are also suggestions for fun activities such as painting murals, participating in singing and dancing recitals, going to cultural festivals, and attending parades.
Together is Better provides a valuable opportunity to discuss the importance of getting involved in your community and to brainstorm with children about ways they can contribute.
