The Day I Had a Dinosaur is the next in the “The Day I Had A…” series. Like in The Day I Had a Bulldozer, we spend the day with Luke and his friends, who each arrive on their own dinosaur. They problem-solve with innovative ways to interact with the dinosaurs at the playground. The book offers some SEL lessons without being preachy while keeping readers engaged and entertained with humor.
Playing with dinosaurs is far from ordinary. Because the dinosaurs are too big to use the playground equipment, they actually become the playground equipment. A typical game of hide-and-seek takes a hilarious turn when both the dinosaurs and children are easily found. The dinosaurs’ lack of knowledge about sticks leads to a game of fetch with uproarious unintended consequences. At the end of the day, everyone becomes calm-osaurus with some dino-yoga.
Humor is found throughout the story through the illustrations and the use of clever made-up words like dino-tastic day, cool-osaurus, and best-osaurus. The child-friendly, colorful, and cartoon-like illustrations add visual appeal and add essential context and humor to the story. This use of visual storytelling aids in the development of young readers’ observation skills.
There are several SEL components to the story. The children display empathy and kindness throughout the book. For example, when the children take the dinosaurs to the playground, they realize they are too big to play on the equipment. The kids use the dinosaurs as their playground equipment to include them in their playtime. When Rex had trouble throwing and catching the ball, Luke and his friends took the time to help him learn these skills and praised his improvement, boosting his confidence.
The book introduces the reader to several different dinosaurs: Tyrannosaurus Rex, Brachiosaurus, Triceratops, and Pterodactyl. Pronunciation guides are provided. Only a few dinosaur facts are provided, which creates an opportunity to encourage children to dig up some facts themselves.
A new worthy addition to the series, The Day I Had a Dinosaur, provides multiple learning opportunities while being a fun and engaging story. As with the first book in the series, there is a hint about the next book’s topic at the end. You will have to read The Day I Had a Dinosaur to find out.
