What Does It Mean to Be Global?
What Does It Mean to Be Global? is part of the “What Does It Mean To Be” series by Little Pickle Press. This series all follow a similar formula but each title addresses a different aspect of life giving examples of how a child can be a better global citizen. “What Does It Mean to Be Global?” starts out with examples of different definitions for the word “global”. “Does it mean having a globe?” “Does it mean studying planets?” This book makes it clear that it means “…being curious about other parts of the world.” The books includes a myriad of examples of how the reader can do this – listening to all kinds of music, eating different types of food, experiencing traditions from other cultures.
There is so much to discuss with this book as it goes deeper than just exploring other cultures. It asks the readers to think about how their actions “…affect another person’s experience.” The book points out that others may have different values and that the reader should respect those values too. The reader is reminded to keep an open mind and to give back. Then definitions are given for the terms community, citizens, cultures, values, diversity and traditions.
What Does It Mean to Be Global? Provides educators with the opportunity to have children present their own ideas of what it means to be global. This book is a great fit for the International Baccalaureate Programme (and other similar educational programs) with its focus on being a global citizen and learning about and embracing other cultures. The book concludes with the following “Being global means being a citizen of the world.”
There is no age limit on being a global citizen, so this book can be used to start a discussion with any grade level. The book is appealing in so many ways. The art is engaging, colorful and whimsical. Each page includes a lot of white and limited text, so it is easy on the eyes for every age level. I highly recommend this book for everyone in the human race!
